ACCA SBR Mock Exams: How to Practise, Review and Improve Your Score
ACCA SBR Mock Exams: How to Practise, Review and Improve Your Score
A mock exam is more than a test of what you already know. Used well, it helps you practise answering under time pressure, spot gaps in your exam technique, and decide what to revise next.
The key is not simply to finish a paper. It is to learn from the attempt. Use this guide to make your next ACCA Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) mock more valuable.
Before you start: choose a clear goal
Decide what you want to practise. Your goal might be to improve time management, apply accounting principles to scenario facts, or write clearer explanations and recommendations.
Check that you are using a mock that is appropriate for your exam preparation, and have the required materials ready. If you plan to practise under exam conditions, set aside uninterrupted time and avoid looking at model answers beforehand.
Sit the mock under timed conditions
Try to complete the paper in one sitting, following the time allowance and instructions for the mock. Practising this way can help you see how you manage the pressure of a full paper.
During the attempt:
- Read the requirements carefully before drafting your answer.
- Note the instruction word and the specific task.
- Allocate your time across the questions according to the marks.
- Keep your answers focused on the scenario.
- Move on when your planned time for a question is up.
If you cannot complete the full paper yet, practise a section at a time—but record how long you spent and build towards a complete timed attempt.
Review your answers, not just your result
After the mock, review each requirement and compare your answer with the marking guidance or model answer. The aim is to understand why you gained or missed marks.
For every point you missed, ask:
- Did I misunderstand the requirement?
- Did I know the principle but fail to apply it to the facts?
- Did I leave out a relevant part of the question?
- Was my conclusion unclear or unsupported?
- Did I spend too long on another part of the paper?
Avoid copying a model answer word for word. Instead, identify the reasoning and answer structure that made its points effective.
Turn mistakes into a revision plan
Group your missed marks into themes. For example, you may need to revisit a technical area, practise scenario application, improve your structure, or manage your time more carefully.
Choose a small number of specific actions for your next study session. For example:
- Review one topic you struggled with.
- Practise a question focused on that topic.
- Write a short answer plan before drafting.
- Complete another timed section and compare your approach.
This makes your revision more targeted than simply rereading notes from start to finish.
Practise again and track your progress
One mock gives you a snapshot; repeated practice helps you see patterns. Keep a simple record of the date, topics tested, time management, and lessons learned. Look for improvements in how directly you answer requirements and apply facts—not just in your overall mark.
If possible, get feedback on your written answers. A tutor’s comments can help you identify habits that are difficult to spot when marking your own work.
Choose the feedback option that suits you
Some students prefer to mark their own practice using model answers. Others benefit from detailed feedback on their written work. Choose the approach that best fits your study needs and schedule.
Apex ACCA Academy offers SBR mock exams with model-answer and tutor-marked options. See the available papers and options on the Apex SBR mock exams page.
A well-reviewed mock should leave you with more than a score: it should show you what to practise next.
